Economic Development

  You Can Take Control of Your Economy

"Economic democracy” refers to any economic system, that is designed to deliver the greatest economic good of the greatest number. This requires dispersing the ownership and control of commerce and finance as widely as possible. Worker-owned businesses have proven to be one of the most effective vehicles for economic democracy. They can range from small, collectively owned industries to national-level coop networks. Worker-owned businesses have proven to be as profitable, more productive and more stable than more traditional management/ownership structures.

 Worker-owned businesses are those where;

  • Workers own a majority of the stock
  • Workers elect the Board of Directors which selects the management
  • Workers share in the profits of the business
  • Workers participate in day-to-day management

 Examples of the types of businesses that can successfully be converted to a worker-owned structure, include ones:

     that are profitable but not profitable enough for a parent company or private investors who can make more in the short term in other areas.

     where there isn't an owner to succeed the current owner. The family interest dies and there isn't a successor capable of taking over.

     there is mismanagement. The company is run by those who simply can't utilitize its assets.

     Where the requirement of a big return in the short run excludes the possibility of experimenting with new technology or processes that are required for the health of an industry.

Where the businesses needs investments to expand.

 Create More Jobs, Better Jobs and Job Security

 Public education efforts and programs must be expanded and made integral parts of the public dialog on economic development. There are a number of organizations that advocate for economic democracy. We must greatly expand this effort and I am asking your assistance in this process.

 State and local governments should offer tax credits and financial assistance to promote democratic institutions. Business owners must be educated to the benefits a conversion to employee ownership and management can bring to their business. Employees must be trained in participatory management skills and the rights and responsibilities of ownership.

 The labor movement can play a critical role in leading this effort because of its closeness to production, its familiarity with all the issues, and its strategic position. It can bring into negotiations a commitment to the social obligations of production to workers and the community; a defense of worker and union interests in the organization of production; and aggressively exhaust what potential remains in a diverse market atmosphere.
